Maritime Business College (MBC) is located in Mi’kma’ki, the ancestral and traditional lands of the Mi’kmaq people. We respectfully recognize the Mi’kmaq Nation as the original caretakers of this land, whose presence and stewardship continue to this day. For thousands of years, the Mi’kmaq have lived, learned, and shared knowledge on this territory, and we honor their enduring relationship with this land.

What is a Land Acknowledgement?

Land Acknowledgement is a traditional practice shared amongst Indigenous groups to recognize the Indigenous land & territory they are visiting. It is a way to honor their enduring presence, acknowledge the history of colonization, and remind ourselves of the Peace and Friendship Treaties. These treaties affirm that we are all Treaty People with a shared responsibility to live and work together in a spirit of respect, understanding, and collaboration.

Why is this important at MBC?

At MBC, we believe education must reflect inclusivity and respect for Indigenous history and culture. By including this acknowledgement, we show gratitude and commitment to reconciliation. We are dedicated to creating a welcoming space for Indigenous students, staff, and community members, and we see this practice as part of our ongoing journey toward mutual respect and reconciliation.
